Richmond, KY is a home rule-class city located within Madison County. As of 2015, 33,533 citizens called this place home. Due to the size of the population, it is the sixth-largest city in Kentucky and the third-largest city in the Bluegrass Region, following Lexington and Louisville. Besides being a residential area, the town also serves as a center for employment and shopping for the south-central portion of the state.

Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller of Virginia. He chose the area due to the access to good spring water and the friendly Native Americans who lived nearby. During that same year, Kentucky legislature made the decision to move the county seat from Milford to the property owned by Colonel Miller.  This sparked a heated debate among the residents of both cities, but regardless of the backlash it was approved. The name Richmond was selected as a way to honor Miller’s place of birth Richmond, Virginia. The city was officially incorporated in 1809. It served as the site of the Battle of Richmond in 1862 during the Civil War. The fight ended with the Confederate Armies capturing roughly 5,300 Union soldiers. In 1906, Richmond established the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School as a place to train teachers. By 1922, the school reinvented itself as a college by expanding its curriculum to offer a four-year program. In order to recognize the academic departments and research at the institution, the name was changed in 1965 to Eastern Kentucky University.

The rich history of the city has drawn many people to the area. Richmond contains the second largest battlefield from the Civil War, Fort Boonesborough, and the White Hall Historic Site. There are numerous tours that allow people to see and experience all of the historic sites and trails. The city also has other interesting venues including the Hummel Planetarium, the Valley View Ferry, and Historic Downtown Richmond. Several famous figures have called the city home including pioneer Daniel Boone and boxer Muhammed Ali. The mansion previously owned by Ali, the White Hall State Historic House, is also available for tours. Richmond can take people back to simpler times, but it also has plenty of modern entertainment options and events. There is the Chenault Vineyards, the championship Gibson Bay Golf Course, and countless shopping destinations to enjoy.
