Within Scott County is the home rule-class city of Georgetown, KY. As of 2016, the Census recorded a population of 33,440 citizens in the town. Due to the total number of inhabitants, it is ranked as the seventh-largest city in the state. The growth of the area started back in the 1980s when Toyota chose the city to be the location for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.  The plant officially began production in 1988. Ever since the plant was opened, Toyota became the top employer for the city and huge contributor to the local economy. As of today, the Toyota plant has over 9,000 employees working there.

Back in 1782, a Baptist preacher, Elijah Craig, and his congregation set out to establish a new settlement. They selected an area that was originally considered to be part of Virginia, and named the settlement Lebanon. In 1784, it was incorporated into the state’s legislature. The settlement leader Craig was able to construct mills to manufacture paper and cloth. These were some of the first created that were located to the west of the Appalachian Mountains. He also established a school, the Rittenhouse Academy, which turned into present day Georgetown College. Residents decided to change the name of the city in 1790. They selected Georgetown as the name as a way to honor President George Washington. However, the change was not officially recognized until 1846. When Kentucky was declared as the 15th state in the U.S. in 1792, the city became the state’s official seat of the government. After the Civil War ended, the town was focused on increasing their transportation methods. The city was then transformed into a railroad hub, which was responsible for connecting the Louisville Southern, the Cincinnati Southern, and the Frankfort & Cincinnati railroads together.

Georgetown is proud to deliver a condensed version of the charm and beauty that can be found throughout the state. The city is situated between Cincinnati, Lexington, and Louisville, so residents are able to enjoy the amenities of the bigger cities but also experience the comforts of a small town.  While it can feel quaint, there is an assortment of attractions to keep citizens entertained. The economy is heavily influenced by the equine industry, just as the entire state of Kentucky is. Horsing events and farms are abundant in the city. The city is also home to numerous bourbon distilleries. It also once served as the location for the professional football team the Cincinnati Bengals’ training camp.
